MUSIC, takes a hold of me, sets my spirit free... SOUL SYMPHONY!
Started DJing in April of 1997. Just barely turned 13, cousin, Freddy introduce Qoolee Kid (DJ Phenom at the time) to party rockin'. Immediately he knew that "this" was what he wanted to do. So weekly sessions began at Freddy's house and the DJ phenomenon was born. Chris Dunn, a close friend of Leland's, was also putting his DJ setup together, and he only lived a block away from home. So after school, they would play basketball for a few hours and then go to Chris' house to practice on the tables. At the same time, older sister, DJ Devina, bought herself a Gemini setup and was bringing home records just about every other day. Practicing at home was hard, since Didi would lock her needles away. But through Didi's musical taste at the time, that's where Qoolee Kid opened up his ear to dance music, Hard House to the liking of DJ Irene, Bad Boy Bill, and Richard Humpty Vision. Now Freddy was all about playing the hype stuff, 2 Live Crew, Freestyle music, so Qoolee Kid's ear opened up even more to different genres.
Hip Hop was always apart of Qoolee Kid's repertoire, listening to the mixes of Z90 radio DJs, DJ Styles, Marlino, Rags, Small Wonder, Q grew up with dreams of being on the radio one day. Spinning Hip Hop was just the beginning. July of 1999, Freshmen year of high school, along came Tyson (DJ Tyrant) and Brandon (DJ Brandoom), introduced themselves and right off the bat let it be known that they were DJs. DJs of a different kind that was unknown to Q at the time. These guys were heavy into the art of turntablism. A few practice sessions at Tyrant's house and Q was hooked. These sessions turned into daily after school activity. Q became so obsessed with scratching that the guys would think up ways to make makeshift crossfaders that were integrated into the daily school binder which mostly consisted of a paperclip and a crossfader knob off an old mixer. Those make shift faders turned into making necklaces out of the real faders from those old broken mixers. With Tyrant and Brandoom, they formed a little group called the Skratch Farmers - "Harvesting Beats."
Tyrant and Brandoom came from another middle school, but still had good friends that attended the rival high school. shortly after the school year started, Q was introduced to Edward (DJ Entec), James (DJ C-Nerio), Jon (DJ Jon Doe), Dennis (DJ Menace), and Anthony (DJ Akrite). These guys were of another caliber of turntablist, but still fond of practicing with new people to keep up their skills. These guys also DJ'd a lot of parties, something that Q was missing but still had a strong interest in doing. Their group was called Ill Effects, and soon Q found himself rockin' parties along side his new found tablists buddies. Covering all parties and events south and southeast San Diego, Ill Effects was a well known name to all the high schools and colleges. Ill Effects wasn't just party rockin'. IE was battling, helping put together local friendly competitions to help sharpen their skills even more. But as they did more and more battles, the party scene died out a little for the crew. Q was still adamant about rockin' the party scene, so with another close friend, Edsel (DJ Edsolar) and Andrew (DJ A-Plus), they formed the Audiobots.
The Audiobots just pretty much took over where IE left off. High school dances, big house parties, car shows, club events, you name it, Audiobots covered it. But the Audiobots didn't last too long because like most good things, they always come to an end. The end was due to college and moving away and carrying out individual projects. Good thing for Q, during the time of the Audiobots, he was heavy into the rave scene, opening himself up to even more genres of music. Q spins a wide variety of music, and at this time, he was took a liking to drum and bass mixed with some experimental tracks. Towards the end of high school, Devina and Nichol (Q's other older sister) introduce him to Brian Cabalic, who at the time, was throwing some hella crazy fun house parties. And when we say house party, we mean Funky House Music house party. This was the moment that Q knew that he wanted to spin this type of music and make people dance the night away.
So after high school, Audiobots dismantled and went their separate ways, Q took a short time off from DJing, that's when he met his beautiful wife, Zarah Lee. But Q, knew he couldn't stay away for too long so he bought another turntable setup which was comprised of the Numark TTX1 direct drive turntables, and a Pioneer DJM-600 mixer that he bought off Brian Cabalic. After the new setup was in house, Q knew he had to start it up again. Over the years, Q was doing club events in Escondido and San Marcos, car shows in San Diego and LA for Sinful Enhancements and iAuto Car Club, and weddings and birthday parties to spare. Q's fine tuned ear for good music is what makes his crowds coming through to check out the tunes and the skills.
Now come to current day, Q has teamed up, once again, with C-Nerio to form a group call Musicality Entertainment. Currently providing San Diego with their DJ and MC services for weddings, corporate events, etc. Since the establishment of ME, Q and C-Nerio have been keeping busy with a bi-monthly event onboard the San Diego Yacht, as well as Debuts and guest spots around the San Diego Gaslamp.
