Biography
Music has always been a passion for Kevin James, in fact he would tell you music was his first true love. By the young age of 5 he was already completely mesmerized by rock and metal giants like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dio and Metallica, bands that still hold a very special place in his heart today. He received his first guitar as a Christmas gift that same year and that was a defining moment for him. That moment marked the beginning of a life long musical journey. He soon became obsessed with the guitar and it was at this time that he learned the importance of constant practice and absolute dedication.
Over the years to come he would delve into several different styles of music. Everything from classic rock bands like Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin who he still credits as his most profound and most important musical influence, to early blues, jazz, reggae, 70’s funk and disco. It was early hip hop though that first introduced him to the art of djing and the infamous Technics 1200 turntable. He was amazed by what he saw these dj’s doing on the turntables and it made a lasting impression on him.
Kevin’s first encounter with house music and electronic music in general came in 1996 when he went with some friends to an underground party in his home city of San Jose, CA. He was completely blown away by the thundering drums and twisted bass lines in the music he heard that night. He had never heard anything like it and this first experience with acid house was literally life changing and would mark another defining moment in his life. He fell in love with this fresh new sound and immersed himself in it. In the spring of 1998 he and a friend began throwing their own parties under the now legendary Children of the Sun brand.
Heavily inspired by DJs like Doc Martin, Mark Farina and San Francisco house legend Tony of The Gathering, Kevin began his own journey behind the decks in September of 2000. He was addicted from the very beginning just as he had been with the guitar years earlier. He began buying and collecting records immediately, and spent every spare minute he had practicing his new craft. Within the next year Kevin began playing out at his own parties and playing as many guest spots as possible for friends and other promoters. He spent the next several years honing his mixing and programming skills and developing a style that is uniquely his own.
Kevin has a great ability to read a crowd and get people on the dance floor . Refusing to be pigeon holed into one sub genre like many dj’s today Kevin plays a wide variety of styles and his sets are always full of surprises. From deep and soulful house, to driving tribal beats, to the funky jackin house sounds of Chicago and on through to the dirtiest peak hour techhouse, Kevin James plays it all.
Kevin is the founder, owner and operator of Eminent Sound (www.eminentsound.com), a mobile sound company specializing in dj events and dedicated to taking sound quality and fidelity to all new heights. Past dj residencies include Children of The Sun and Sticky and currently he holds residencies with Dysfunctional Family Gathering and Faderwave Radio where he can be heard spinning live every Saturday afternoon from 3-5pm PST.
